Last Wednesday evening, there was a watermelon eating contest. It was intense. Later I heard that drinking 6 cups of watermelon juice has the same effect as viagra. I asked, "what about eating over 6 pounds of watermelon?" We figured that must be more similar to drinking a cup of water in Mexico (trapdoor syndrome).

The Dark Knight - a non-review...more like a couple of thoughts and opinions.

Go watch it.

It was pretty good as far as action movies go, I didn't fall asleep once during the 2 and a half hours of this movie. There was only one action sequence where I thought, "I wish this part would end so we could get back to the movie." Overall though, top notch. And even though it was quite dark, the movie kept some of the typical Batman punniness; for example, coming across two dead guys, one with the first name Harvey and the last name Dent, and of course it points to Harvey Dent. Or the irony of the entire fire truck engulfed in flames. Things like that. Also, Heath Ledger did a good job, and I'm not even just giving him the benefit of the doubt, he really nailed the part.

If "hosanna" means "save now," then what does "hosanna in the highest" mean?

One is silver and the other's gold.

It is both a wonderful and difficult thing to be with an established group of friends. Wonderful to know and love each person in the group, and to feel known and loved. Difficult to feel like you are not quite part of it. That the group is also a group without you.

In Matthew 4:4, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 8:3 by saying 'People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'

What does it mean to live like this? Clearly, with the ever-growing percentages of obesity (pun fully intended), we have no problem living by bread (food) alone. We are very serious about this. Three meals a day. Snacks. Dessert. Some people try to go on diets, just to try to control the amount of food they eat.

What if we were serious about living by every word that comes from the mouth of God? What if we read Scripture three times a day? Snacked on it? Treated ourselves? How many people do you know that have had to go on a Bible diet?

Just like we need food to nurture our physical body, we need the Word of God to nurture us spiritually.

Thank God

Sometimes I have a hard time when I hear someone (or even myself) say, "Thank God it wasn't me," or something similar. Aren't we indirectly thanking God that it was someone else? Yes, we should be thankful always, but I have a hard time being thankful for misfortune on someone else. It seems natural though, when you see (or hear about) something bad happening to someone else, to say, "Thank God it's not me."
